Eco-Friendly Pet ProductsPosted on January 22, 2016 by stephanie.evans
You use a mixture of baking soda and lemon juice to clean your kitchen, you ride your bike whenever possible, always bring your reusable bags to the farmer’s market and only water your lawn at night (on the prescribed days). You’re doing a great job at being the green kid on the block, but what about your four-legged friends? Even your pet has a carbon footprint, well, paw print! And everything – from what you wash them with to the toys they play with – has an impact on the environment. Here are a few eco-friendly pet products that will keep tails wagging.
- Safe Shampoos: Pick a dog shampoo that contains natural ingredients such as aloe vera and vitamin E. However, steer clear of anything with tea tree oil, which can be toxic to dogs. Before trying something new, however, it’s always a good idea to check with your veterinarian, as even organic solutions can cause rashes, dryness or other skin reactions in animals. Here are a few green dog shampoos, tried and tested by pooches and their owners.
- Better Litter: It isn’t just your kitty’s litter that makes you gag whenever you’re cleaning out your cat’s litter box. Dust and odor-blocking chemicals can lead to upper respiratory problems for you and your pet. Now, green manufacturers have come out with kitty litter gravel made from materials such as recycled newspaper, wood shavings and sawdust – all better for your pets’ health and the environment.
- All-Natural Toys: Most pet owners know exactly what’s inside their dog’s favorite toys because Duke chews them up and leaves the stuffing everywhere as fast as canine-ly possible. Rather than sending the artificial ingredients to the landfill and then buying another doomed chew toy, play fetch with pet toys made from organic cotton, canvas, rope and rubber. So even if your overeager pooch accidentally ingests his favorite new eco-friendly squeaky, at least it will be made from non-toxic materials.
