Welcome to our first Eco-Centric blog! A forum where energy and the environment converge to promote more sustainable lifestyles.
As a leading retail energy supplier, we believe it’s our responsibility to be a leader for change to combat the environmental challenges facing us today. We also aspire to raise awareness in communities on the ground and online about preserving our environment and the benefits of ‘going green’. No doubt you’ve heard the phrase, but do you really know what going green means to you, and our future?
According to the Environmental Defense Fund, “the Earth could warm another 2° to 11.5°F this century if we fail to reduce emissions from burning fossil fuels and deforestation – devastating our livelihoods and natural world.” To put this into context, at the end of the last ice age, when the northeast United States was covered by more than 3,000 feet of ice, average temperatures were only 5 to 9 degrees cooler than today.
With Earth Day coming up on April 22nd, there are many things we can do beyond just a day to integrate a greener lifestyle into our daily routines and activities. From little steps like unplugging kitchen appliances or purchasing a water filter to reduce plastic bottle use, to greater commitments, such as planning sustainability events in your community or purchasing carbon offsets to reduce your carbon footprint, we want to help you kick start – or boost – your efforts.
Living green can help you save some green, too. Making your home more energy efficient for instance, can significantly lower your utility bills. Not to mention the cost benefits of activities such as carpooling, driving a hybrid car or finding new uses for old clothes/products, etc.
With Eco-Centric, not only do we want to be your go-to for green news, ideas and inspiration, you’ll also learn more about us – including our products and services – to give you a better understanding of who we are and what we do as a company. For example, did you know Just Energy has invested over $50 million in more than 30 green energy projects? In partnership with our customers, we’ve offset over 660,000 metric tons of carbon emissions, equivalent to taking 128,000 cars off the road, and injected 2.8 million MWh of renewable energy into electricity grids – enough to power over 280,000 homes for a year.
Whether you’re taking your first steps towards going green or you’re a seasoned advocate in the campaign against climate change, we hope you’ll tune in regularly to learn more about us, and join us on our journey towards a cleaner, greener, healthier planet.
