Halloween is creeping up on us, and kids and families everywhere are in the process of finding costumes, carving pumpkins, and decorating the ultimate haunted houses for the occasion. Let’s make this holiday as “eek-o-friendly” as possible! Below, you’ll find some of our top tips for a green Halloween:
Consider finding costumes or making your own with materials lying around the house. Hand-me-downs, worn tee shirts, scraps, old boxes, construction paper, etc. are great materials for making fun and creative costumes. Check out these awesome recycled costumes for ideas to spark your imagination. If you need some “extras” or accessories to complement your look, consider visiting your local thrift store.
Nothing says Halloween like the crunch of leaves under the feet of trick-or-treaters! Decorate your entryway and “haunted house” with natural items, such as leaves, gourds, squash, pumpkins, and more.
Trick or treat:
At the risk of being “that house” that hands out apples or healthy food on Halloween, consider the following “green” snacks that may be more in line with the neighborhood kids’ expectations: organic agave sticks, real fruit strips, raisins, organic dark chocolate, organic licorice, roasted pumpkin seeds, or rice krispy snacks.
Additionally, be sure to go over this list of Halloween safety tips before heading out for a night of ghosts, ghouls and goblins. Halloween is supposed to be scary… not unsafe!
