Yuck! Just the thought of all those nasty chemicals in your beauty products is enough to make your stomach turn. Or maybe it was Just Energy’s last blog on the dirty chemicals found in your medicine cabinet that scared you enough to toss everything out of your bathroom cabinet. Whatever the reason, we’re thinking you’re probably in need of some new products. A little terrified to buy things at the drugstore? Fear not! There are plenty of all- natural remedies you can whip up at home that will make your hair super soft, your skin smooth and hydrated and leave you smelling downright delicious. And the best part: you’ll avoid the toxic chemicals found in many cosmetics, beauty creams and treatments, you’ll save money and there’s a lot less packaging that would otherwise end up in a landfill.
The only warning on this grooming product is to not mistake it for guacamole. Take one mashed avocado and combine with equal parts coconut milk until you have a thick paste. Comb it through your hair and leave it for 15 minutes before rinsing. Avocado, packed with protein, natural oils and vitamins A and B, acts as a great, all-natural hair conditioner.
Many of the restaurants and hotels in the Florida Keys have a little something extra next to their bathroom sinks—key lime-scented body scrubs that make your hands softer than they were the day you were born. You can shell out big bucks for a jar in the hotel gift shop, or you can follow our lead and purchase the makings of a great scrub while on your next supermarket run. In a jar, mix together a half-cup of sea salt (kosher salt works, too), a half-cup of coconut oil (a natural conditioner) and one-and-a-half teaspoons of citrus zest (lime, lemon, grapefruit). While you’re in the shower (so it’s easy to rinse off), rub it into elbows, knees, feet – all those areas that need smoothing and hydrating.
What’s a gal (or guy) to do when they want a little dab of something sweet here and there but the potential dangers lurking in that atomizer are too much to bear? Head over to the grocery or health food store and pick up some sweet almond or olive oil, beeswax and an organic essential oil of your choosing (depending on what you like, maybe some bergamot, cedar wood, jasmine or lavender) to make a sweet, solid perfume that is totally green and chemical-free.
Combine equal parts water, almond or olive oil and wax and heat on the stove until the wax is melted. Remove from heat and add five to 15 drops of your chosen essential oils and stir well. While it’s still liquid-y, pour it into a container and let it stand for about 30 minutes or until it hardens. Apply to skin.
