Packaging. We’re drowning in it. Take a moment to think about the garbage you’ve thrown away this week; everything from single-serving crackers to the plastic packaging around tech gadgets (why do they make those things IMPOSSIBLE to open, anyway?!). It all adds up!

A little creativity and effort can go a long way towards carbon neutrality! Below, find our top tips for cutting down on packaging waste:

1. Buy in bulk. Are you in the habit of buying individually packaged yogurt, applesauce, snacks, crackers, popcorn, sodas or frozen meals? It’s a habit to break. Try to buy in bulk, instead, and dole out single servings into re-usable containers. For frozen meals, cook fresh food and then seal and freeze in containers or plastic bags.

2. Avoid travel sizes. You can apply the same principle of buying in bulk to many products, including shampoos, conditioners, lotions, etc. For travel, use small, refillable bottles or containers. Not only is this a great way to reduce your carbon footprint, but you’ll save money, too.

3. Brew your own (organic) coffee or tea, and re-use your coffee mug or thermos instead of purchasing your morning latté – complete with disposable cup – every morning. Do the same with water and your water bottles.

4. Opt for recycled or sustainable packaging whenever it is an option. Many eco-friendly brands take pains to ensure that their products and foods are packaged in the most sustainable way possible.

5. Recycle, reduce, re-use. Recycling is one of the best ways to offset carbon emissions caused by garbage overload. It’s impossible to avoid packaging entirely. Be aware of what you’re throwing in the garbage. Ask yourself, “Can this be recycled?” Try to purchase materials that are accepted into your neighborhood or local recycling program.
